I’ve just returned from this excellent meeting where I gave 3 presentations. There was a clear consensus that Hip Resurfacing is still an excellent choice for men under 55 with hip arthritis. We also discussed all aspects of hip joint preserving surgery, and the different materials avaialble for hip replacements. There was an International faculty with surgeons from the UK, France, Switzeraland, and North America, and it was a truly memorable meeting. I talked on the problems that we are seeing with large diameter metal head hip replacments, the outcome of revision surgery, and ceramic resurfacing. The session on metal hip problems underlined the fact that there are still big gaps in our knowledge about how and why these hips have failed. It is certainly the case that all of the manufacturers have the same problems, which seem to be related to the way the head fits on the stem. We believe that the trunnion is too small, and that this allows the head to move, resulting in wear and corrosion. This happens with all of the brands, whether or not they are matched to a stem made by the same company. This is a very contentious area, and rapidly evolving. Here in Southampton we seem to be providing some of the answers.
