Not all hip problems need surgery. I see lots of patients who have pain in and around the hip which isn’t caused by arthritis. Trochanteric bursitis is a common condition, a bit like tennis elbow. It usually gets better on its own, but physio and sometimes an injection can speed up recovery, and reduce the risk of recurrence.
Sometimes pain in the hip can be caused by problems in the lower part of the back or even the knee. A thorough clinical assessment and appropriate investigations will confirm the diagnosis and help to plan treatment. If I can’t help because it isn’t a hip problem, then I will refer you to one of my specialist colleagues.
Because I specialize in hips, I quite often see patients who have had a replacement done somewhere else, and they aren’t happy with the outcome. Perhaps one leg feels longer than the other, or there have been dislocations of the hip. Please contact me if you would advice on what to do next.
