I’ve been a consultant for nearly 12 years and have kept a personal database of every operation that I do. I record information about diagnosis, type of surgery and implants, and outcome data. These are my data from the last year (not including cases done by trainees under my direct supervision):
Total procedures: 243
- Resurfacing: 42
- Ceramic hip replacement: 68
- Revisions: 42
- Bilateral hip operations: 17
- Average age: 64 (25-89)
- Male/female: 98/145
- Complications: no dislocations, one pulmonary embolism, one readmission for wound infection
This is a fairly typical year’s activity for me. I will publish more outcome data from previous years in the coming weeks, and hope that you will find this information useful when it comes to choosing which surgeon/operation is the right one for you.
