Jeremy Latham MA MCh FRCS(Orth)
I’ve been a Hip Surgeon since 1998 when I was appointed to Southampton General Hospital. I trained in Oxford, Adelaide and Birmingham and brought the technique of hip resurfacing into the region. I use different implants, materials and techniques depending on a patient’s particular needs and expectations, and I offer a bespoke and ‘hands on’ service. I strive for perfection in every case, from the simplest to the most difficult.
I specialise in primary and revision hip replacement surgery, and hip resurfacing.
My experience of and interest in hip surgery have led me to specialize more and more in complex hip replacements, for example in developmental dysplasia and Perthes’ disease, and revision hip surgery. The failures that we saw with some metal-on-metal hip replacements caused an epidemic of difficult revision cases and I’ve spent many years setting up clinical pathways both in the NHS and private sector to identify and treat these patients. I formed the Metal Hips Research Group to bring together scientists, engineers and surgeons to discuss the problems we share and to provide effective leadership and support.
Because of the clinical work and research in which I’ve been involved, I’m often invited to be on the faculties of national and international courses and meetings about hip surgery. I’m part of development teams developing a ceramic hip resurfacing and new designs of hip stems, and I’ve been an instructor on courses in primary and revision hip surgery.
In November 2012 I launched the Southampton Orthopaedics: Centre for Arthroplasty and Revision Surgery (SOCARS) at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. Here in Southampton we provide world class clinical and research facilities for patients with complex joint replacement needs and problems. We combine surgical expertise with multi-disciplinary research into why some joint replacements fail, and there are very few hospitals in the world that offer such a complete service.
I’m now in full-time private practice, having left the NHS in 2016. I am fully committed to the robust governance procedures required by the GMC and private hospitals in which I practice. My work is regualrly audited and monitored.
My main interests are:
- Hip replacement
- Hip replacement and hip resurfacing for younger patients.
- Hip replacement for complex problems such as the effects of dysplasia and Perthes’ disease.
- Revision surgery for failed hip replacements and resurfacing
I do about 200 hip replacements a year. My data are entered into the National Joint Registry and I keep a very close eye on all of my patients.
I’ve been involved in research throughout my career and have worked on:
- the outcome of hip replacements
- corrosion in hip replacements
- ceramic resurfacing
- new designs of primary and revision hip replacement stems
- sexual function after hip replacement
I’m on the Steering Group of FortisNet, which is a unique collaboration of clinicians, academics and industry, based at the University of Southampton.
Away from work I’m an enthusiastic (but frustrated) pianist, Bridge player, video maker and occasional skier and sailor, but really I enjoy nothing more than being at home with my family and friends.
