Returning to sports

We understand that hip replacement surgery is a big step forward in terms of improving your quality of life. You’ll be keen to start enjoying activities and leisure again, free from the daily aches and pains. Patients often ask us about when they can expect to return to sports after hip replacement, but this really depends on the sport in question.

Low-impact sports

Most people find they can pick up a golf club or start sailing after around 3-6 months. For other sports, we recommend that you discuss your plans with your surgeon.

Contact sports

You will not be able to play contact sports after hip replacement surgery. However, lots of our patients play tennis and badminton and some even return to skiing after hip surgery.

Ask your surgeon

If you have any concerns about your return to sports after hip replacement surgery, we recommend that you speak with our surgeon, Jeremy Latham, who will be able to advise.
