A big part of my job is revision hip surgery, which is when I have to remove a failed hip replacement and put in a new one. It can be quite a challenge when the soft tissues and bone are deficient, but it can also be very gratifying when the patient does well, and is able to return to a relatively normal way of life. I get to see a lot of X -radiographs (Xrays) of all sorts of hip replacements, done in many different places. Surgeons like me spend a huge amount of time scrutinizing radiographs, and we can all tell which hip replacements have been done with care and attention to detail. I call it ‘Done with Love’ and I try my best to ‘Do it with Love’ every time that I operate. Most of the hip surgeons that I know are their own greatest critics and like me they spend all of their time honing and refining their surgical skills and judgment. Some of the radiographs that I get to see don’t always show that the the operation was ‘Done with Love’, which is disappointing. However, hip replacement surgery is generally quite a forgiving operation and the appearances on the radiographs don’t always predict the outcome of surgery – it is more art than science much of the time!
